For Dance, Environment and Participatory Practice

「ダンス」と聞くと、少し身構えるかもしれません。「え、ダンスしなきゃいけないの？」「ダンスだけしか研究できないの？」と思った方、ご安心ください。ここでの「ダンス」は、特定のジャンルを指すだけでなく、人が自由に動き、出会い、交わる場をつくる行為や振る舞いのメタファーでもあります。吉田ラボでは、もちろんダンス研究も歓迎しますが、それに限らず、さまざまな人々が自由に表現をできる空間とはどこか？という問いを出発点として、芸術実践の多様な表現にアプローチしていきます。

また吉田ラボでは、舞台芸術を広義に捉え、劇場空間に限定されない身体表現の実践と理論を対象に研究を行っています。その中でも、野外でのパフォーマンスや参加型の芸術実践、環境との関わりを重視した表現形式に注目し、身体と空間、コミュニティ、社会との関係を再考していきます。

 

実践を通じたフィールドワークや批判的理論（参加とは何か、アートにおける環境批評、ポストヒューマン、アートマネジメントなど）から、現代の舞台芸術やパフォーマンスアートの制度、環境のあり方そのものを問い直す視座を醸成していければと考えています。研究対象や方法論は多様ですが、いずれも個人の研究や実践を起点にしながら、芸術と社会の交差点を巨視的に考察していくことを目指しています。

When you hear the word “dance,” you might feel a little hesitant. “Wait, do I have to dance?” “Is this a place where only dance is studied?” No worries.  Here, “dance” is not just a genre—it is a metaphor for acts of movement, encounter, and the creation of spaces where people can engage, interact, and express themselves freely.

At the Yoshida Lab, we certainly welcome research on dance. However more broadly, we take as our starting point the question:

-What kinds of spaces allow diverse individuals to express themselves freely?
-From there, we explore a wide range of artistic practices grounded in the body, participation, and social imagination.

 

Our lab approaches performing arts in a broad and inclusive sense, focusing not only on theatre-based work but also on physical expression in public or outdoor spaces, site-specific performance, and participatory art.

We are particularly interested in practices that:

• Engage with theatrical, non-theatrical or open-air environments

• Foster collaboration and community through participation

• Reflect critically on human–environment relations

 

We investigate how the body interacts with space, community, and society, both in theory and through lived artistic practice.

 

Our research combines fieldwork and artistic practice with critical theory, including:

• Theories of participation and co-creation

• Environmental critique in art

• Posthuman philosophy

• Cultural policy and arts management
   

Each project may differ in scope and method, but all are grounded in the researcher’s own questions and practices, aiming to rethink the relationship between art and society from a broader, systemic perspective.

We also encourage the creation of original artistic works as part of research.
