Shuntaro YOSHIDA (b. 1989, Miyagi, Japan)  is a dancer, choreographer, performance maker and researcher. He is currently an Associate researcher at Berlin Centre for Advanced Studies in Arts and Sciences (BAS). He obtained a Ph.D. from Tokyo University of the Arts in September 2020. He has an M.A in dance at Tokyo University of the Arts and the University of Paris 8, and a B.A. in Human Sciences at Waseda University. He was a JSPS Post-doctoral Research Fellow at Faculty of Sport Sciences at Waseda University from 2021 to 2024 and a Visiting Scholar at the Department of East Asian Studies at NYU from 2018 to 2019. 

 

In his choreographic research, he draws on participatory art in dance understood perception in “clumsy-seeming movement.” In his works, he explores choreographies with the local participants that extend the subject of dancing from humans to the natural environment, focusing on the alarming destruction of urban nature by humans and the questioning of environmental issues. He has created several types of artistic works, such as dance, installation, and collective projects. His research further highlights the concept of “post-choreography”.

 

His choreography “Of Chroma” selected Alternatives & Futures Public Programs Series at Queens Museum in 2019. He is part of the artist collective “Mapped to the Closest Address” from 2019 and “Chōri (調理/조리) Dance” from 2021. His works were shown in Japan, Paris, and New York and other places. He awarded Saison Air Partnership of Saison Foundation in 2020, Tokyo and Graduate Student Travel Award of Dance Studies Association in 2019, Chicago.

1989年宮城県生まれ。現在、リサーチアソシエイトとしてベルリン芸術大学ベルリン芸術科学高等研究センターに所属。東京藝術大学大学院音楽文化学研究領域博士課程修了。2021年から2024年まで、日本学術振興会特別研究員（PD)として早稲田大学スポーツ科学学術院に所属し、2018年から1年間、ニューヨーク大学アーツ＆サイエンス校東アジア研究科の客員研究員として所属した経験を持つ。2019年には、 Graduate Student Travel AwardをDance Studies Associationにおいて受賞。振付プロジェクトや舞台作品の発表、現代ダンスの研究を経て、近年はダンサー、振付家、現代ダンス研究者として幅広く活動。作品のスタイルは、振付プロジェクト、インスタレーション、舞台作品と多岐に渡る。

 

プロジェクトでは、参加型のダンスにおける「誤動（clumsy-seemming movement)」に着目して、リサーチ及びフィールドワークを実施している。また、人間による都市の自然破壊や環境問題への問いに焦点を当てながら、ダンスの主体を人間から自然環境へと拡張させるような振付を探求し、「ポスト・コレオグラフィー」の概念を研究している。
